Internet is a network system of computer networks, wherein users from any computer, if they have permissions, can get information from other computers.

It provides connectivity between computers through hardware and software infrastructure.

Internet has various services such as electronic mail (e-mail), online chat, online gaming, file transfer or sharing, video streaming, and interlinked hypertext documents.

Benefits of the Internet

• Provides faster communication channel like e-mail, instant messaging, file transfer and file sharing.  With this, users will be able to communicate effectively and can save time and effort.
• Provides latest news and online references.  Most of the newspapers today are now online.  Users can browse the internet web sites to read the latest news, research on online encyclopedias, and join forums to learn new things from other people.  With this, accessing information is faster.
• Provides entertainment like uploaded movies, movie guides, video streaming, and music downloads.  Users can now listen to online radio stations and download the songs they want.
• Provides commerce services like online shopping, travel bargains, plane schedules, and buy and sell.  With ecommerce, users can buy items online by just using their credit card or any form of bank transactions and without the need to go to the mall.  They can just wait for the items to be delivered on their doorstep.
• Provides jobs to people who want to make money online like buy and sell services, blogs and web design.

The word technology refers to the making, modification, usage, and knowledge of tools, machines, techniques, crafts, systems, and methods of organization, in order to solve a problem, improve a preexisting solution to a problem, achieve a goal, handle an applied input/output relation or perform a specific function. It can also refer to the collection of such tools, including machinery, modifications, arrangements and procedures. Technologies significantly affect human as well as other animal species' ability to control and adapt to their natural environments. The term can either be applied generally or to specific areas: examples include construction technology, medical technology, and information technology.

By the mid 20 th century, humans had achieved a mastery of technology sufficient to leave the atmosphere of the Earth for the first time and explore space.

The human species' use of technology began with the conversion of natural resources into simple tools. The prehistorical discovery of the ability to control fire increased the available sources of food and the invention of the wheel helped humans in travelling in and controlling their environment. Recent technological developments, including the printing press, the telephone, and the Internet, have lessened physical barriers to communication and allowed humans to interact freely on a global scale. However, not all technology has been used for peaceful purposes; the development of weapons of ever-increasing destructive power has progressed throughout history, from clubs to nuclear weapons.

Technology has affected society and its surroundings in a number of ways. In many societies, technology has helped develop more advancedeconomies (including today's global economy) and has allowed the rise of a leisure class. Many technological processes produce unwanted by-products, known as pollution, and deplete natural resources, to the detriment of the Earth and its environment. Various implementations of technology influence the values of a society and new technology often raises new ethical questions. Examples include the rise of the notion of efficiency in terms of human productivity, a term originally applied only to machines, and the challenge of traditional norms

Philosophical debates have arisen over the present and future use of technology in society, with disagreements over whether technology improves thehuman condition or worsens it. Neo-Luddism, anarcho-primitivism, and similar movements criticism the pervasiveness of technology in the modern world, opining that it harms the environment and alienates people; proponents of ideologies such as transhumanism and techno-progressivism view continued technological progress as beneficial to society and the human condition. Indeed, until recently, it was believed that the development of technology was restricted only to human beings, but recent scientific studies indicate that other primates and certain dolphin communities have developed simple tools and learned to pass their knowledge to other generations.

UGLY FACE OF SOCIAL MEDIA

ANNOYED that a girl ignored his declaration of love, a 13-year-old boy decided to get back at her.

He set up a Facebook account in her name and posted comments about other school mates. One posting mentioned that the girl had a crush on another classmate and that she actually did not like her best friend.

  
As the girl did not own a Facebook account, she was unaware of the postings until her friends told her. Suprised and upset, she told them that it was not she who wrote the comments as she did not have access to the Internet and had never registered on the social media website.

Thankfully, her friends believed her and let the matter drop. Her best friend suspected that the boy could be the person who had set up the fake Facebook account. She confronted him. He denied it initially but finally confessed. A few days later, he closed the account.

Fortunately for the girl, while she was a victim of cyber bullying on Facebook, the issue did not turn serious. She was lucky that her friends realized the truth and the boy apologized.

Unfortunately in other parts of the world, bullying and harassment on Facebook are increasing, especially among teenagers and adolescents. In some cases, as a result of incessant bullying, some victims hace even committed suicide.   

Facebook, launched in 2004, has been cited as the worst social networking site for Internet trolling. According to a survey by UK online watchdog Knowthenet, 87 per cent of 2,001 teenagers surveyed have been subjected to abuse on Facebook, compared with 19 per cent on Twitter.

In its 2012 Teen Internet Behavior Study, software company McAfee revealed that 92.6 per cent of teens said they had witnessed cyber bullying on 

Facebook. The same study found that only 23.8 per cent of teens surveyed witnessed cyber bullying on Twitter.

More worrying was that the study also found that only one out of 10 parents were aware that their children were victims.

In another study, Irish researchers revealed that teenagers believed that cyber bullying was the worst kind of bullying because they “couldn’t escape it”, even at home — because pictures and messages can spread easily and quickly.

Pictures, video clips and phone calls are the worst types of cyber bullying, according to the pupils, and less likely to be noticed by an adult compared with traditional forms of bullying.

The study also found that more than a quarter of the victims did not know the identity of the cyber bully. Of those who did, the bully was typically a single female or a small number of females, from a different class in school, but in the same year as the victim. Most respondents indicated that cyber bullying was short term, lasting only one to two weeks. However, four reported that it had gone on for six months up to several years.
